Ditchling

Highlighting local groups, projects and sources of help for you

Food and land

The Ditchling Horticultural Society runs the allotments in the Parish while â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹Ditchling Village Orchard is a community orchard on Boddington's Lane. Ditchling Nature Space is a new project in the strategic gap between Ditchling and Keymer. There is a community garden at The Macs Farm, The Garden Gang while The Sussex Peasant brings food from local farms for sale in Ditchling on Thursdays. The Sussex Grocer in Hassocks sells some local food and a number of loose dry foods. Zerohub in Burgess Hill is a more general refill shop.

Buildings and energy

Ovesco is a community energy company in the Lewes area who can provide energy and insulation advice. Visit a Heat Pump is a service where local people let you visit their home, talk to them and look at/listen to the whole installation. There is lots more useful guidance and links on the East Sussex County Council web site.

Travel and transport

The local scheduled buses are Compass Travel routes 167 and 168 and these are supplemented by Flexibus. The footpath by Keymer Road has been resurfaced making it easier to walk or wheel to Hassocks station, which has cycle hire and EV charging spaces. Further campaigns to improve cycling and walking routes are underway. There are direct trains from Hassocks to St Pancras to connect to Europe. There are companies that help arrange holidays abroad by train, such as Byway, Eurostar and Great Rail Journeys. The Man in Seat 61 provides a wealth of information.

EV charging is available at The Bull public house in Ditchling, for customers, and in the public Orion car park in Hassocks.

Sharing and re-use

There is a WhatsApp group in Ditchling called Swap & Share, which a neighbour can help you join. There is also a Facebook group called Hassocks, Ditchling and Hurst Sustainable Swap Shop you can join plus other similar local groups. There are several more general online donation or sale platforms that may show you local items or where you can give away or sell your own unwanted goods. The Repair Café runs monthly in Hassocks the same (4th) Saturday as the village market. There are several charity shops in Hassocks who take and sell a wide variety of goods. In addition, larger items can be donated or found at charities with bases in other local towns. Some will collect from your home eg Emmaus.
